August 2024 Life Recap

Last updated: September 17, 2024

After two incredibly busy months traveling the world in June 2024 and July 2024, August 2024 was a healthy, restful, and recharging month for me.

I spent time in Austin, got back into my healthy routine, and built new relationships while reconnecting with old friends. I traveled to Colorado for a family reunion and then to Houston to help host a conference.

Most Popular Posts

These are some of my most popular posts that I made in August 2024.

I’ve never added this section before. Send me an email or leave a comment below if you think it’s interesting.

“A good way to know if someone is rich and smart is if they do Angel investing. If they do Angel investing they are either not rich or not smart.”

I was on a first date yesterday and this woman told me that she has a financial advisor from Northwestern Mutual and I immediately shouted “I hate those bastards!!” The date never recovered, but I did get the opportunity to mansplain Vanguard index funds.

Cool Business Idea: They charge $25 per day to rent dual monitor docking station setups at business hotels.

Friend Meetups

I saw all of these friends for 1-on-1 hangouts in August 2024:

  • Jason Nemer: I got a bodywork session done by my friend Jason Nemer. He is the inventor of AcroYoga and doing a new bodywork practice in Austin, Texas that I highly recommend. It is quite expensive at around $300 an hour, but I found it extremely relaxing.
  • Ben Casnocha: My friend Ben Casnocha visited Austin, Texas with his team to do some research for an upcoming conference that he is hosting. I got to spend the better part of a day with him and drive them to the airport. That was fun.
  • Kyle from Dive Chat: Had a long, rambling tea time vent session with Kyle from Dive Chat.
  • Katelyn Donnelly: Met up with Katelyn Donnelly at Barton Springs Pool. It was great to see her after a long time. More importantly, I met someone very interesting when I was at the pool with her. I’m thankful for these magic moments of meeting strangers that can sometimes change my life.
  • Zach Pogrob: Zach Pogrob visited Austin, Texas, and I got to take him to Barton Springs pool and host him at my apartment. This was a fast and furious hangout, but I’m so happy that we did it.
  • Sushi Date: I had a first date at a sushi restaurant. I wrote about this on my Twitter and it went viral with a lot of comments on what I should text the woman as a reminder message. The date was great!
  • Cody McLain: Dinner with Cody McLain. This was the first time I had a long one-on-one hangout with Cody even though I’ve hosted many events at his home over the last years. It was great to get to know him better and felt like a very special hangout.
  • Jasmine Starr: Podcast recording with Jasmine Starr. My friend Sam Parr introduced me to her and she was in town booking a bunch of podcast interviews. It was a great experience and a nice practice for my upcoming My First Million podcast interview. Jasmine is very smart and has great energy.
  • Neville Medhora: Wedding venue walkthrough with Neville Medhora.
  • Sophia the Power Walker: Me and my new friend Sophia met up one afternoon to brainstorm video ideas and content creation stuff. I’ve been struggling with making videos again and she helped me think through some things and I enjoyed giving her some advice, although I’m not sure how much of the advice she will take.

Local Events

I attended a bunch of events in Austin and nearby:

  • Dating Salon: I hosted a successful dating salon with my friend Courtney. I did a nice writeup of it here with photos.
  • Justin Roth‘s Party: One of my readers named Justin Roth hosted a cocktails and icebreaker party at his home in San Marcos, Texas. I surprised him by driving out to visit. I wrote an article about it on my Twitter. This was a great experience, and I’m glad that I went.
  • RISER MEGA Networking Event: I attended the RISER MEGA Networking Event hosted in my neighborhood one night. The cool thing is I saw several friends here who I had not seen in a while and I’m happy that I spoke to them because one of them told me about a Tony Robbins live stream that they were hosting, which I attended a few days later.
  • Tony Robbins Business Mastery: I attended a live stream for this event that someone here in Austin was hosting at his home. I’m thankful that I live in a city like Austin where there are business-minded people who I get to meet at local events that are open to having me as a guest at these scenarios.
  • Austin Executive Symposium: This is an event that’s hosted once or twice a year. I briefly met the guy who’s organizing them. He’s doing such a good job with LinkedIn outreach for a white collar crowd. It was neat to see his business model.
  • Alexa McKnight’s House Party: My friend Alexa McKnight hosted a house party. She’s a new friend that I met through my friend Sam par that I’ve been hanging out with a lot. It was neat to see her gather people and use about 5% of my books framework and formula.
  • David Kirkpatrick‘s House Party: David Kirkpatrick hosted another one of his wholesome house parties. He is a super reader of my book that has taken my formula to the next level. With lightning talks and introductions and an enormous guest list. I think there were probably 80 people there. He is one of the best event hosts that I have seen in Austin, Texas right now.
  • Full Moon at Barton Springs Pool: I attended the famous full moon at Barton Springs pool, which is an absolutely magical experience that I recommend everybody should do at least once in their life. Just imagine this enormous spring-fed aquifer filled with hundreds if not thousands of people at 9:30 pm howling at the moon. The water is crisp and the energy is electric. This was amazing.
  • Barry’s BootCamp Workout Class: I did a group workout class with my sushi date and it was challenging and fun. I should probably do more group workout classes.
  • Skip the Small Talk: This was a speed dating event that I attended and that I want to write about. It was at first uncomfortable and awkward but by the end I was so happy that I went. I had so many interesting conversations.
  • Facial Treatment: I had a facial with a lot of extractions especially on my nose area. This was incredibly painful but left me with buttery smooth skin afterwards. Note to self: I should not wait three years between doing this again.
  • Meet the Neighbors Party: Meet the neighbors party at Lazarus Brewing. This was fun and I’m happy that I filmed some new video content about my book thanks to Courtney for kicking me in the butt and helping me film some videos at that event.

Family Reunion

I started the month up in Colorado for a family reunion on my mother’s side. My mother rented an enormous house in the mountains with a beautiful view for us in Estes Park, Colorado.

Partial Family Photo

My favorite part was to reconnect with some cousins that I had not seen in a long time. We played games like Codenames, we cooked meals together, we went on walks, and we generally just connected as a family for the first time in many years.

One day we went to explore Rocky Mountain National Park and did a guided tour as a whole family in an enormous open-air jeep.

This was a lot of fun and it was neat to be out of cell service in the deep nature. We saw cool animals and lots of beautiful vistas.

Hot Takes Hot Dates

I wrote about how 80 people gathered at a downtown Austin, Texas bar for a new event called “Hot Takes Hot Dates.” The cost of the event was $25 per person. I attended it and really liked it. It was an innovative format that I haven’t seen before. I rate the event a 9 out of 10 for Austin, Texas and would recommend it to anyone living in the area.

Here are two of my key tips and takeaways:

  1. If you’re going to a singles event, arrive on time! It’s less intimidating to show up to an empty room compared to walking in to a crowded spot where everyone is already talking. You’ll meet more people this way, too.
  2. Finding a good venue for your dating event is tough! You really want to do a buyout or have exclusive access to the space so you’re not sharing it with other patrons.

HostCon

At the end of the month, I drove to Houston, Texas to spend two nights helping Rob Abasolo, who runs a YouTube channel called Robuilt, to host his conference HostCon for over 400 people that are interested in Airbnbs and other short-term rentals.

This was the third time I’ve helped Rob and his wife with this conference, and it felt much more relaxed and easy. My role was to host the opening night happy hour and to lead some networking sessions, as well as be a keynote speaker on the first morning.

  • It was great to work with James Robilotta as the Master of Ceremonies. James did a great job and I really enjoyed going out to lunch with him for some Southern food on the last day.
  • One of my favorite parts was hanging out with my friend Codie Sanchez, who was the premier speaker for the event on the first day. We went to dinner afterwards with one of her famous and smart friends.

Nick’s note: The opening night of HostCon was stressful for me. The venue and number of people made it more difficult to do structured activities like last time. My speech on Day 1 was great, but I wish I had about 10 more minutes. Right at the end of the conference, Rob gave me a hug and thanked me for helping and told me that he loved me… that was nice and made my heart warm.

Conclusion

It feels good to be back in my routine, and it feels good to be spending more time in Austin, Texas.

My top memories from August 2024 included:

  • Family reunion and connecting with my cousins.
  • Special acro yoga session from Jason Nemer.
  • Sushi date and swimming in Barton Springs Pool for the full moon.
  • Dinner and getting to know my friend Cody McLain better.
  • Practice conference with Ben Casnocha.
  • Hot Takes Hot Dates event and writeup.
  • Skip the Small Talk singles event.
  • HostCon conference and all of my conversations there.

I spent a lot of time this month just cooking, working out, sleeping, and spending quality time with quality people. I built at least one exciting new relationship.

I’m still figuring everything out and trying to work on big things, but I’m happy that I made time for self-care and new relationships.

See you next month!

I’m still testing out these public monthly recaps. See other entries from past months here.

BONUS – Hiring a House Manager

I hired a house manager because I am lazy at times and most often incompetent. This was her list of things to do for one day in August. I am very thankful for her help. This sorta went viral.
